Lateral Pelvic Lymph Node Dissection in Treatment of Advanced Rectal Cancer
Rectal cancer constitutes about one third of all colorectal cancer cases. Total mesorectal excision (TME), first described by Heald, has become the gold standard in rectal cancer treatment, since it was shown to provide a dramatic reduction in local recurrence rates. However, TME does not involve any approaches for lateral pelvic lymph nodes (LPLN), which may be a source of local recurrences. T...

The principal aim of radical surgery for rectal cancer is complete resection of the tumor together with its feeding and lymphatic vessels. There are two types of lymphatic flow from lower rectal cancer: proximal lymphatic flow, toward the root of the inferior mesenteric artery in the mesorectum, and lymphatic flow toward the pelvic sidewall alongside the internal iliac blood vessels beyond the ...

This clinical trial studies local invasions from primary colonic and rectal cancers (urinary bladder, abdominal wall, small bowls, uterus, vagina, stomach, bile tract, spleen, duodenum, pancreas, ureters, kidneys), with or without undiscovered metastasis. Primary locally aggressive colonic and rectal cancers include tumors that are staged T4N1-2Mx on diagnosis, and are often associated with a l...
متن کاملTreatment outcomes in locally advanced colorectal carcinoma
BACKGROUND: Locally advanced colorectal cancers form a distinct subgroup where contiguous organs could be involved without distant metastases and so may be amenable to curative surgical resection. It was our objective to report our experience in treating six such patients with operable locally advanced colorectal carcinomas. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the case notes of 47 patients who...
متن کاملFibromatosis in vertical rectus abdominis myocutaneous flap imitating tumor recurrence after surgery for locally advanced rectal cancer: case report.
BACKGROUND Abdominoperineal excision is performed in patients with locally advanced, low rectal carcinoma. Reconstruction of the dorsal vagina and perineum using the vertical rectus abdominis myocutaneous flap following extensive surgery results in favorable surgical outcome and quality of life. However, the rectus abdominis muscle, as part of the anterior abdominal wall, may develop fibrous le...
